Our opals are natural stones, not synthetic. Also, we like the look of inlayed opal or other stones. Occasionally we use boulder opal (normally found in thin layers) and rarely a good doublet or triplet.
Opal used in jewelry is generally Australian opal. We make special pieces with Nevada opal we’ve mined. Most opal we will cut ourselves. Some boulder opal has already been cut, but often it will be reshaped by us for a special use.
Other natural stones we mine include: garnets, sunstones and other gemstones. Mining of gems, including the Nevada opal, is not profitable. We do not own or operate the mines. We use gems we mine to incorporate the adventure for you and a constant connection for us with the fun that is Opal Originals.
We use an ancient method of metalworking known as “lost wax casting”. A unique wax model is carved, molded or formed into the desired shape/texture(s). The model is put into a metal cylinder and a plaster-like substance (investment) poured in to cover the model and fill the cylinder. When dried the cylinder is put into a kiln and the wax is burned out at high temperature. A hollow remains with the perfect impression of the model. We create molds to reproduce some of our work. But, what you purchase is uniquely an Opal Originals creation.
We also fabricate some work. We cut, form, texture and/or solder metals into a desired piece. Some pieces will require a combination of techniques.
Quality is important. Opal is usually more elegant when set in yellow gold. We use solid gold – not gold plate. We like the finish and durability of 14 karat gold. Therefore, the gold used in our work is normally 14 karat. In certain instances, 18 karat gold may be used.
Other colors of gold or even silver may also be a good choice. But, quality, workmanship and durable results demand we use solid metals. We will tell you what type of metal each piece is made of and the quality being used.
Note: we do have an exception with respect to chains. Selecting and properly fitting a chain is individual. For this reason, chains are not normally provided. If included as a matter of courtesy, the chain provided will be a gold-filled or silver display chain only.
